Summer Health & Wellness Tips

Summer is fast approaching! With the warmer temperatures and school being out, summer brings lots of opportunities to get outdoors, be active, and make healthy lifestyle choices. However, the heat, vacations, gatherings, and irregular schedules can also pose some health challenges. Use these tips to stay healthy and well all summer long.

Stay Hydrated

With hot summer temperatures, it's easy to get dehydrated from sweating. Be sure to drink plenty of water, especially if you'll be outside for an extended period or doing physical activity. Carry a reusable water bottle with you and drink regularly, even if you don't feel thirsty. Avoid sugary drinks like soda that can contribute to dehydration.

Practice Sun Safety

The summer sun can damage your skin in as little as 15 minutes, so it’s best to understand what to do during this time. While moderate sun exposure provides healthy vitamin D, too much increases skin cancer risk. Be sun smart by tracking the UV index and minimizing exposure during peak hours between 10am - 4pm. Cover up by wearing lightweight, long-sleeved shirts and pants, and a wide-brimmed hat when possible, seek shade, wear sunglasses that block UV rays, and don't indoor tan. Perform regular skin self-exams and see your doctor for any concerning spots.

Eat Seasonal Produce

Summer is peak season for delicious fruits and veggies like berries, melons, corn, tomatoes, zucchini, and more. Load up on these tasty, nutritious, locally-grown foods. Their rich antioxidants will help protect your body from inflammation. Have colorful salads, grill veggie kabobs, or blend berries into smoothies.

Stay Active

The warm summer weather is perfect for hiking, swimming, cycling, or playing sports. Take advantage by doing outdoor activities you enjoy. Aim for at least 150 minutes per week of moderate exercise. Build muscles with resistance workouts 2-3 times a week. Being active relieves stress and boosts your metabolism too!

Get Rest

With so much to do in summer, it can be tempting to stay up too late. But lack of sleep impacts focus, mood, appetite and health. Make sure you still get 7-9 hours of quality sleep per night. Go to bed and wake up at a consistent time. Keep your bedroom cool, dark and quiet for better sleep.

Have a fun, safe and healthy summer by staying hydrated, eating fresh seasonal produce, protecting your skin, being physically active, and getting adequate rest!
